Sports Chiropractic, does that mean you only see athletes?
I get this question a lot about being a sports chiropractor. I have had extra training on how to treat specific injuries that athletes may experience. This means I have learned how to evaluate, diagnosis, and use different treatment & rehabilitation options. It has also given me the knowledge of who to refer to if it is beyond what I can do. Even though I have been trained in sports, that does not mean I only see athletes.
I have seen a variety of patients that come to be for many different reasons. From athletes that push their bodies to perform amazing thing, to those who are active users of the gym and also experience aches & pains. The most common goal for every patient that comes in is that they want to get better because they know they can function better throughout life with less pain. I also see those who have pushed their health & wellness aside to take care of others and are now wanting to figure out how to live with less pain.
By being a sports chiropractor, I have a different philosophy compared to some chiropractors. I do not think that by someone coming to visit me for 15-30 minutes to receive passive care multiple times a week or a month we will make a difference. I seek to use soft tissue mobilization, corrective exercises, adjustments to improve mobility, reduce pain and perform better. This means that a patient needs to take an ACTIVE role in their treatment. Discussions like hobbies, profession, activities of daily living, stress, activity level and nutrition are some of the factors that must be understood to feel better. There are 24 hours in the day, if you are being seen for 15-30 minutes of it, what stays the same the remaining 23.5 hours in a day? You have to think about the other factors that could play a role into your pain.
Ultimately, you need to find a Chiropractor that you feel comfortable with, value what they do & the education that they provide.
