Disc Injuries
When a disc bulge or a herniation occurs, part of the nucleus in the middle of the disc will protrude through the fibers. Sometimes they even protrude outside of the disc itself, which may even compress nerves coming out of the vertebra or the spinal column. If a nerve is compressed, you may experience numbness and tingling traveling down your leg. Disc injuries occur due to repetitive lifting, twisting, bending or extensive pressure. However, genetics, posture and other factors can play a role in a disc injury. Most disc herniations resolve on their own over a years’ time, however getting symptomatic care in the meantime will allow you to get back to your daily activities quicker. Majority of the patients that walk into chiropractic offices, are experiencing low back spasms, experiencing decreased motion, numbness and tingling down one or both legs. Chiropractic care has been shown to reduce symptoms of disc herniations and allow the patient to move and function better. A detailed examination will determine the best approach for treatment for each individual patient.
There are situations where symptoms are more severe and require referrals to neurosurgeons. This is why getting examined by a professional is extremely important!
