Intervertebral Discs: What are they?
Between the vertebral bodies of your spine there are intervertebral discs. Intervertebral discs literal means “between” vertebra. There are 23 discs, from your neck to your pelvis, they are made up of fibro-cartilaginous cushion that surround a nucleus in the center. These discs are flexible like your nose or ear. Discs allow for motion as well as serve as shock absorbers. Discs are avascular meaning that there is no direct blood supply. The way the discs stay healthy and hydrated is by getting nutrients through the end plates of the vertebral bodies. The only way that happens is through movement.
Many people are told they have degeneration in their spine. Did you know that by the age of 50, 90% of lumbar (low back) discs have some evidence of degeneration? However, some of those individuals do not experience low back pain.
Degeneration can be a result of several factors like: immobility or hypermobility of the spinal joints, posture or genetics, but is it the sole reason for low back pain? Is there a muscle imbalance in your body between your core, glutes and back muscles? Be sure to get a thorough examination performed by a licensed professional to determine the cause of your pain. Education is a key component if feeling better, moving better and functioning better!
